May 25 - Mercado de San Miguel

Morning Lecture. Next, we will visit one of the gastronomic highlights of Madrid, the Mercado de San Miguel. From the finest Iberian ham and freshest fish and shellfish brought in daily from Galicia, to Mediterranean rice dishes and the most exquisite cheeses from Castile, Asturias and the Basque Country – at the Mercado de San Miguel, you’ll find all the highlights of Spanish cuisine. Evening free to explore the city at your own pace.

May 26 - Toledo Day Trip

This morning we will head to the nearby city of Toledo, a magnificent walled hilltop city. After we arrive, we will take a guided walking tour through the city’s labyrinth of winding pedestrian streets, where we will learn about the mix of Islamic, Jewish, and Christian cultures that defined this city’s history and architecture. After, there will be free time for expiration. Toledo is known for its traditional crafts, including damascene metalwork, antique-inspired swords, and handmade marzipan (sweet almond candies).

May 27 - Bullfight

Morning lecture. Free time to explore the Spanish capital in the afternoon. Some places we recommend are:

  • The Royal Palace of Madrid - tour this grand palace, where the Spanish royal family still conducts state ceremonies.

  • Museo Reina Sofia - Spain’s national museum of 19th-century art hosts many famous works, including Pablo Picasso’s Guernica.

  • Parqu del Buen Retiro - Visit Madrid’s main park to see how locals spend their free time.

  • Templo de Debod - This ancient Egyptian temple (from 2200 BC!) was given by Egypt as thanks for the assistance of Spanish archaeologists in the 1960s. Come here for great views over the city.

In the evening, we will attend the most traditional of Spanish Fiestas, a Bullfight. The Spanish people consider them art forms that are intimately linked with their country’s history, art, and culture.  Pressure groups attempt to lobby against bullfighting yet the King of Spain himself has allegedly stated that the day the EU bans bullfighting is the day Spain leaves the EU.

(Sleep Madrid)
